How can you check if these notifications are natural occurrences or glitches? A common method is logging into your Instagram account on the desktop. If you can see the follow request on the desktop but not on the mobile app, it means there is an issue from Instagram’s end. If you cannot see the follow requests on the desktop either, it likely points to a natural occurrence.
How to Fix Instagram Follow Request Notification but No Request

Method 1: Log out of the Instagram app
First off, you can try out simple methods such as this one. Log out of your Instagram account from the app and log in again. The app will get refreshed, and you might be able to see the follow requests after logging in again.
Method 2: Switch to a public account
We know you want to keep your account private and aren’t telling you to switch permanently. You just need to go public briefly and go private again. Follow these steps to do that:
Step 1: Open Instagram and log in to your account.
Step 2: Go to your profile by tapping on your profile picture in the lower-right corner.
Step 3: In the profile section, tap on the three parallel lines at the upper-right corner and select Settings.
Step 4: The Settings page contains several options. Tap on Privacy.
Step 5: The Private Account option is at the top of the Privacy page. Tap on the slider once to turn off your account’s ‘Private’ status.
Step 6: Tap on Switch to Public to confirm. Your account will go public.
As you go public, all pending follow requests will get approved automatically. You can then check for any new followers if any.
Step 7: Close Instagram from in the foreground and background.
Step 8: Open the app again, and switch back to private.
Method 3: Uninstall and reinstall Instagram

Method 4: Report the problem to Instagram

Step 1: Open the Instagram app and go to your profile section.
Step 2: Tap on the three lines at the top-right corner and select Settings.
Step 3: On the Settings page, tap the Help button.
Step 4: The Help screen has four options: Report a problem, Help Centre, Privacy and security help, and Support Requests. Select the first option: Report a Problem.
Step 5: If a pop-up appears, select the last option: Report a Problem.
Step 6: On the next screen, explain the issue briefly– preferably in four to five sentences– mentioning how you get notifications regarding follow requests but don’t see any requests thereafter. Also mention that this is NOT a one-off occurrence.
Step 7: Tap on the Submit button in the top-right corner to submit the report.
