With the way creators have been growing and diversifying on social media these days, the count of their followers on these platforms is seen as a significant token of what they’ve achieved. It is for this reason that achieving a following count of 1M, 100k, 50k, 25k, or even 10k is treated as a milestone by them, often celebrated with much vigor and a traditional approach, like cake-cutting, balloons, parties, and so on.
While Instagram rules these conventions, they’re also present on platforms like Snapchat, which was once designed for privacy but is currently equipped with just as many explorable options for gaining popularity as any other.
However, unlike the following count on Instagram, on Snapchat, you can collect subscribers. In this blog, we’ll talk about everything you need to know about the Subscribe button on Snapchat and its nuances. Let’s get started!
What Does 5k Subscribers Mean on Snapchat?
If you’re new to Snapchat, we understand your confusion about certain things you see for the first time. But 5k Subscribers means exactly what it says on Snapchat: that the profile has over 5,000 subscribers.
When you see this icon on an individual’s Snapchat profile, take it to mean that they’re a Creator on Snapchat (we’ll discuss more of that later in the blog) and are highly active on the platform.
5k Subscribers is seen very much like a milestone on Snapchat because until you reach this mark, the exact number of your subscribers will be invisible to others. All they see on your profile is >5k Subscribers. Crossing over to the other side is, thus, a big deal for many.
Now that we’ve clarified your doubt, let’s get to the real question; a question we’ve seen many Snapchatters wonder about: Is the Subscribe button for every Snapchat profile? If so, how to get one on yours?
Unfortunately, this button is reserved solely for the public accounts on the platform, which makes sense since in order for others to subscribe to your content, you’ll first need to allow them to view it. And for that, you’d need a profile everyone can see; a public profile.
How to switch your Snapchat account to Public? A step-by-step guide
Having answered your first question, we’re moving forward with the second one: to get a Subscribe button; you’d first need to switch to a public profile on Snapchat. Go through the step-by-step guide that follows to understand how that’s done:
Step 1: Launch the Snapchat mobile app on your device.
The tab that’ll first open on your screen is of Snapchat Camera. From here, look towards the top-right corner of the screen; you’ll find a thumbnail of your bitmoji avatar. Give this thumbnail a tap.
Step 2: As you do, you’ll be taken to the Profile tab on Snapchat, wherein all your information, including your friend list, Snap Map, and more.
On the top-right corner of this tab, you’ll see a white cogwheel icon. Give this icon a tap, and you’ll be taken to your Settings.
Step 3: Once here, you’ll need to first alter your privacy controls to enable the switch.
To do that, scroll down this tab until you find the PRIVACY CONTROLS section. Under this section, you’ll find these five options:
Contact Me
Send Me Notifications
View My Story
See My Location
See Me in Quick Add
Out of all these settings, you need to change the settings of the first three to Everyone; the last two aren’t mandatory, so you can do it as you see fit.
Step 4: Once these changes have been made, you can return to your Profile and look for the Public Profiles section on that tab.
There’s only one option listed here: Create Public Profile.
Step 5: Give this option a tap, and then you’ll be shown the changes it will bring to your profile.
Keep pressing Continue until you reach a confirmation message. Select Get Started here to change your profile to a public account.
When you check your profile now, you’ll find the Subscribe button right there.
How do public profiles qualify as Creators on Snapchat?
If you’ve shown interest in creating a public profile on Snapchat, it’s not a far-fetched idea that you’d aim for the Creator status sooner or later.
After all, who wouldn’t want to unlock the scope for broader discovery, get thorough audience insights, and assign roles to other Snapchatters? Furthermore, it is also the first step on the path to getting the Snapchat Star and making way for a verified Snapchat account. But how does a public profile qualify as Creator?
Well, the Snapchat Team has set certain rules in place to determine it. Here are the rules:
- First and foremost, you’ll need to have a minimum of 100 subscribers on your public profile.
- Your public profile also needs to be older than a week.
- Lastly, the presence of at least one bi-directional friend is mandatory.
Wrapping it up

Moving forward, we also talked about whether this button was integral to all Snapchat profiles and how you could get it on your own. You’ll find the step-by-step guide of the same above.
